New Legal Research Center Director Appointed

December 22, 2008 — Earle Mack School of Law Dean Roger Dennis announced the appointment of Mark P. Bernstein as director of the Legal Research Center.

Bernstein is currently Director of the Omer Poos Law Library at St. Louis University, where he is also an Assistant Professor of Law. Previously, he was Associate Director and Senior Lecturing Fellow at the Duke University Law Library.

“Mark is widely admired and respected by the faculty, staff and students with whom he works and is actively involved as a law librarian at a national level,” Dean Dennis said when announcing the appointment.

At SLU, Bernstein chaired a Technology Advisory Committee, and at Duke, he co-chaired the Implementation Committee for an Integrated Library System. He is a past chairman of the Consortium of Southeastern Law Libraries and of the Strategic Planning Committee of the Academic Law Libraries Special Interest Section.

Bernstein’s publications include articles on the evolution of the law library, the impact of law specialization on library services and qualitative methods for evaluating the value of a library. He has taught first-year research courses as well as Advanced Legal Research. He is keenly aware of the major shifts affecting the traditional model of legal education including the increase in practical skills courses, interdisciplinary research, joint degrees and specialized concentrations. He also realizes how the role of librarians as educators will increase as they are asked to instruct faculty and students in using new and a wider array of legal resources.

He will begin at Earle Mack School of Law in July 2009.
