Professor Anil Kalhan Discusses Mandatory Detention and Deportation at Loyola University
November 30, 2012 — Professor Anil Kalhan moderated and presented at a panel on mandatory detention, deportation and minimum sentencing at Dialogues on Detention, a conference at Loyola University College of Law in New Orleans on Nov. 30.
Organized by Human Rights First, the event was part of a series of dialogues focusing on the overlap between criminal justice and immigration policy.
An expert on immigration law and comparative law, Kalhan moderated a discussion featuring Louisiana State Rep. Joseph P. Lopinto III, Michael Tan of the American Civil Liberties Union and Opelousas, La. Mayor Donald Cravins.
Kalhan’s presentation dovetailed with publication of his post on ImmigrationProf Blog Nov. 29 that contrasted the rising detention of immigrants with prison-reform initiatives in many states that have gained bipartisan support.
In September, Kalhan moderated and presented at another conference in the Dialogues on Detention series at the University of California-Irvine.
