Professor Anil Kalhan Leads Panel at ‘Dialogues on Detention’ at UC-Irvine
September 25, 2012 — On Sept. 24, Professor Anil Kalhan took part in “Dialogues on Detention: Applying Lessons from Criminal Justice to the Immigration Detention System” at the University of California-Irvine.
Organized by Human Rights First, the event was the second in a series of four dialogues that aim to promote discussion between legal experts, government officials, private attorneys and elected leaders to explore overlapping challenges facing the nation’s immigration-detention and criminal-justice systems.
Kalhan, an expert on immigration law, moderated and presented on a panel called “What is ‘Civil’ Detention?” The panel also featurd Kate Jastram, the former legal advisor to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and a lecturer at the UC-Berkeley School of Law; Sheriff Gary Raney of Ada County, Idaho and Ruthie Epstein, researcher and advocate with Human Rights First.
