Dean's Faculty Research Fellow:

The Earle Mack School of Law Legal Research Center solicits applications from second and third year law students for the position of Dean's Faculty Research Fellow to begin in October 2010 and continue through the Spring Semester 2011.

The Dean's Faculty Research Fellow, under the direction of the Head of Research Services, works on research projects for law school faculty members and the Legal Research Center librarians. Past research projects have dealt with traditional legal research topics and various interdisciplinary subjects including business, education, and psychology. The successful candidate will have opportunities to work with faculty members, make full use of the library's electronic and print collection, and develop excellent research and writing skills.

The fellow works an average of 10 hours per week while school is in session. The fellow doesn't work during reading, exam, or break periods.

Pay is competitive. To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to Peter Egler, Head of Research & Instructional Services, at pje26@drexel.edu . The deadline to submit applications is October 4, 2010.

• Welcome our new Administrative Assistant, David Corbin! - New
  We are very pleased to have a new administrative assistant in the Office of Student Affairs - David Corbin. David will assist with student inquiries and requests, exams, textbooks, lockers, and other administrative functions of student affairs. David most recently served as Student Services Counselor at American University in Washington D.C. David is new to the law school and Philadelphia, so please give him a warm welcome when you see him in OSA!
  
  
• Spring Registration - New
  We expect to post Spring registration materials by October 1. Spring web registration for 3Ls will occur on Tuesday, October 12 from 12:15 p.m. - 11:59 p.m. Web registration will re-open for all 2Ls and 3Ls on Thursday, October 14 at 12:15 p.m. and remain open through the first week of Spring.
  
  
• Intent to Concentrate
  Students who are actively pursuing one or more law concentrations should add the concentration(s) to their record by filing a Change of Curriculum form with OSA. Please note that seats in certain Spring courses will be reserved for declared concentrators. Students who declare their intent to pursue a law concentration are in no way obligated to complete it.
  
  
• Health Fair: "A Healthier U" | Wednesday, Oct 13 | All Day Event | 2nd and 3rd Floor Lounges
  A series of sessions centered around health and wellness including yoga, healthy recipes, massage therapy, food demonstrations, and health assessments. If you are interested in teaching a mini-session, please contact Anahita Buhariwala (apb352@drexel.edu) or stop into OSA.
  
  
• Jenkins Law Library Cards
  Access cards for the Jenkins Law Library (http://www.jenkinslaw.org/) will be distributed in Legal Methods classes. Transfer students not enrolled in Legal Methods may pick up their library cards from OSA.
  
  
• Federal Direct Student Loans
  Any student who wishes to accept their Federal Direct Student Loans, and has not done so, should go to www.studentloans.gov and sign their Master Promissory Note. A Direct Loan on a student's financial aid account will also be reflected on their bill. If a student fails to sign their MPN, Student Financial Service will begin (in mid-September) to remove these loans from the student's bill. This could result in a balance due and finally a hold on a student's account.
  
  
• Graduate Plus Loans
  Any student interested in applying for a Graduate Plus Loan for the 2010-2011 academic year can still do so at www.studentloans.gov. Allow 2-3 weeks after you are approved for Drexel to certify your loan and the funds to begin disbursing.
  
  
• Work-Study Funds
  At present, there are no additional Federal Work Study funds available for Law Students. This may change later in the academic year, so any student interested in being added to a Work-Study Wait List should email Mary de Rivera at mmd88@drexel.edu. Any student awarded Work-Study for the Summer Law Program who has remaining 2010-2011 funds, is free to use these in another Drexel work-study job. The pay rate may be different and all funds must be used by June 30, 2011.

She is also a Contributing Editor for Student Lawyer magazine (American Bar Association). She will discuss strategies for finding jobs in the small firm market. This talk is open to all classes! • Wednesday, October 6, 2010 - Challenging the Paradigm: Getting a Legal Job - Shifting the Paradigm to Make You More Marketable - (Room 240) (8:30am - 10:00am) Please join Marti Candiello, head of ClientBridge, LLC, for a breakfast program specifically designed to help students maximize their focus on skills that are indispensable to successfully presenting themselves to potential employers and/or clients. We hope that from this presentation, students will gain a different perspective on employers' expectations and needs and practical skills that they can immediately apply. Space is limited to 15 students. Availability will be determined on a first come, first served basis. Those students who are interested should RSVP on Symplicity.

October 22 and 23, 2010, Washington, DC - The Equal Justice Works 2010 Conference and Career Fair's registration is now open to students. This is an excellent opportunity for students to meet with government and public interest employers from throughout the country. Employers will be conducting interviews as well as "table talk" sessions. There will also be opportunities for resume review and workshops on debt management/loan forgiveness programs. 1Ls are welcome to attend the conference but cannot sign up for interviews. • HBALEF 2010-2011 Scholarship - Deadline: Friday, October 1, 2010 (New)
  The Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania Legal Education Fund ("HBALEF") is a non-profit organization dedicated to the professional and educational advancement of Hispanics in the legal profession. Each year, the HBALEF awards scholarships to qualified law students throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Delaware Valley. In prior years, scholarships were awarded in the amount of one thousand six hundred and fifty dollars ($1,650.00). This year, we expect to remain consistent with amounts awarded in prior years. The HBALEF hopes these funds will not only promote the success of Hispanic students but also attract more Hispanic lawyers to practice in Pennsylvania.

  HBALEF 2010-2011 Scholarship Application. Please note that all applications must be postmarked or e-mailed by Friday, October 1, 2010. The scholarships will be awarded at the 21st Annual HBALEF Scholarship Reception on November 4, 2010.

• PA Bar's James W. Stoudt Memorial Scholarship Program- Deadline: December 1, 2010 (New)
  The James W. Stoudt Memorial Scholarship program provides two scholarships to each of the accredited law schools presently serving Pennsylvania, one of which is specifically designated for support of a minority law student. The scholarships are provided on an annual basis and are awarded based upon the following criteria: academic achievement, financial need, and the potential for making a contribution to society and the legal profession either through anticipated legal field or other efforts.
  
  Only Pennsylvania residents in their 2nd year of a three-year law school program (current 2Ls) may apply. Also, applicants must be members of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, which is free for law students choosing to be electronic members. Two scholarships will be awarded: one general and one specifically designated for historically under-represented ethnic minority students (African-American; Hispanic American; and Native American). The Pennsylvania Bar Association determines that amount of the award annually. This year, the amount of each award is $3,000.
  
  As reflected in the attached scholarship application, the eligibility requirements are as follows.
  
  Applicants must confirm:
  
  • Pennsylvania residency - as evidenced by a copy of driver's license or voter registration;
    
  • Second year in a three-year program or third year in a part-time program as confirmed by an unofficial transcript;
    
  • Good standing and academic achievement as evidenced by an unofficial transcript;
    
  • Financial need - as certified by the law school's Financial Aid Office; and
    
  • Membership in the Pennsylvania Bar Association Law Student Division which is free for electronic members;
    

  Additionally, an essay of up to 500 words explaining how the applicant will make a contribution to society and the legal profession, a current resume, and up to two recommendations are also required.
  

  The application deadline is December 1, 2010, and recipients will be selected prior to the end of the year. No more than two scholarships will be awarded to students at any one law school.

• Santa Clara Centennial Writing Competition - Deadline: Jan 31, 2011 (New)
  Santa Clara University School of Law turns 100 in 2011, and one of their celebratory events is a law school writing competition, open to all students from ABA law schools. The topic is "Future ethical challenges lawyers may face practicing in the areas of (i) intellectual property law, (ii) international law, or (iii) public interest law." Submissions are due by midnight, Pacific Time, January 31, 2011.

  Banner & Witcoff is proud to offer the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for law students. This scholarship is part of Banner & Witcoff's commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers from diverse backgrounds.
  
  The Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship is open to all students currently enrolled in an ABA accredited law school and pursuing a career in intellectual property law. The applicant must be a member of a historically under represented group (including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability) and must have exemplary writing and oral communication skills.

• The Center for Alcohol Policy's 3rd Annual Essay Contest - Deadline: November 22, 2010
  The Center for Alcohol Policy sponsors an annual national essay contest to foster debate, analysis and examination of the importance of state-based alcohol regulation. The essay contest attracts entries from academics, legal professionals, students and others. Topics have included "State regulation of alcohol is important because…"and "The 21st Amendment is important because…"

  The Center for Alcohol Policy is pleased to announce the launch of its third annual national essay contest.
  The theme of this year's contest is: "Describe how state-based regulation of alcoholic beverages promotes public health and safety."
  The top three winning entrants will receive prizes of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000 respectively.

  "For more than 75 years, alcohol has been effectively regulated in the United States by a state regulatory system guaranteed by the 21st Amendment," said CAP Advisory Council member and Cumberland School of Law Professor Brannon Denning. "This year's essay contest is intended to highlight and explore the impact of state alcohol regulation on society and its role in protecting Americans in today's environment."

  The deadline for submission is November 22, 2010, and winners will be announced in 2011.

• American Indian Law Review Writing Competition - Deadline: Jan 31, 2011
  Eligibility: The competition is open to students at accredited law schools in the United States and Canada who are enrolled as of the competition deadline of Jan. 31, 2011. Editors of the American Indian Law Review are not eligible.
  
  Topics: Papers will be accepted on any issue concerning American Indian Law. However, topics recently published in the American Indian Law Review will not be favored.
  
  Standards: Papers will be judged on the basis of originality and timeliness of topic, knowledge and use of applicable legal principles, proper and articulate analysis of the issues, use of authorities and extent of research, logic and reasoning in analysis, ingenuity and ability to argue by analogy, clarity and organization, correctness of format and citations, grammar and writing style, and strength and logic of conclusions.
  
  Awards: First place - $1,000 and publication of paper in the American Indian Law Review, an official periodical of the University of Oklahoma College of Law with international distribution. Second place - $500. Third place - $250.
  
  The three winning authors will be recognized on the masthead of the American Indian Law Review, and will receive copies of Felix S. Cohen's Handbook of Federal Indian Law, provided by LEXIS. Other entries of publishable quality may also be published in the American Indian Law Review. These authors will be so notified.
