"Black in Latin America" Series | September 15 - October 15 In celebration of Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, September 15, 2011 through October 15, 2011, LALSA is hosting a documentary viewing and discussion of "Black in Latin America" a four part PBS series dealing with race relations and the Afro-Latino culture across six countries, including Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, and Peru, each country serving as representative of a larger phenomenon.
Join LALSA on Thursday, September 15, from 4 - 6 p.m., in room 140, as we kick off the series with Cuba: The Next Revolution. In this episode, Henry Louis Gates finds out how the culture, religion, politics and music of Cuba are inextricably linked to the huge amount of slave labor imported to produce its enormously profitable 19th-century sugar industry, and how race and racism have fared since Fidel Castro's communist revolution in 1959. Following the film viewing, Professor Donald Tibbs will be facilitating a discussion with students. Food and refreshments will be provided. Join LALSA on Thursday, September 22, from 4-6 p.m., in room 140, as we continue the series with Brazil: A Racial Paradise? In this episode, Henry Louis Gates delves behind the facade of Carnival to discover how this "rainbow nation" is waking up to its legacy as the world's largest slave economy. Following the film viewing, Professor Kevin Woodson will be facilitating a discussion with students. Food and refreshments will be provided. Join LALSA on Wednesday, October 5, from 4- 6 p.m., in room 140, as we explore another episode in the series: Haiti & the Dominican Republic: An Island Divided.
In Haiti, Henry Louis Gates Jr. tells the story of the birth of the first-ever black republic, and finds out how the slaves' hard-fought liberation over Napoleon Bonaparte's French Empire became a double-edged sword. In the Dominican Republic, Gates explores how race has been socially constructed in a society whose people reflect centuries of intermarriage, and how the country's troubled history with Haiti informs notions about racial classification. Following the film viewing, Professor Anil Kalhan will be facilitating a discussion with students. Food and refreshments will be provided.
